I'm really stressed about paying for college… should I not go?

volunteer pay the national debt

PLEASE DON’T OVERLOOK THIS AS ANOTHER BLOCK OF TEXT: I’M SERIOUSLY FREAKING OUT AND CONSIDERING NOT GOING TO COLLEGE, EVEN THOUGH I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO PURSUE A HIGHER EDUCATION.
Up front, the college I’m most attracted to right now as a possibility is Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. According to recent statistics, I have a high chance of getting in, with my GPA and test scores. The problem is financial.
I don’t think I can get a full-tuition scholarship, and it’ll be tough to pay for room-and-board, books, and other fees, anyways. My parents are rather lower-middle-class, but I don’t know for sure how high our income is; either way, I don’t feel comfortable taking their money, because my older sister got into a huge debt that they have to pay off now, and she dropped out of college after less than a semester.
Also, my grades aren’t too high: I have a 3.5 (on the 4 point scale) currently (in my first semester of senior year) and my classes are a little tough on me this year, so I’m not sure if I can raise my GPA to something like a 3.8 or a 3.9.
I’m not that well-rounded – I did chorus for three years but dropped out freshman year, did theater for two (two productions, first of which was 4th-in-state in the one-act drama competition), and then visual arts – not pleasant, right? – and I haven’t been able to play sports because of health problems. I volunteered a summer at the public library, and have been in the school literature club four years (published in the lit. magazine once), and studied Latin all four years of high school (cum laude on the National Latin Exam, freshman year).
So, could I get grants or scholarships enough to cover most of the cost of college? or will I be in debt until I’m fifty? I don’t know. I’m super confused, and stressed, and it’s not helping my anxiety and depression. Are there any grants or scholarships for someone with my grades and test score, someone who hasn’t been in Beta Club or things like that, or played sports? Um, I’ll find my SAT scores in a moment. Oh, here they are:
Math: 530 (yes, I know it’s awful. math is my worst subject, always has been, but I’ve excelled in English and writing)
Critical Reading: 690
Writing: 660

ACT score, without the writing portion (I did take the writing portion, I just haven’t looked up my scores for a little while) :28

What can I do to protect myself from a spouse that is trying to divorce me during a deployment?

volunteer pay the national debt

I am a National Guardsman. I served in Iraq in 2004… all of 2004. My Iraq time vs. Iraq time now is considerably diffferent. I was Extremely opposed to my wife volunteering for a deployment to Iraq. Unfortunately, my wife is always searching for constant approval from her mother. Her mother (an apex, alpha female) encouraged my wife into going on the deployment for the "employment opportunity" that it presents.
The deployment has been tough for me and the mom has been constantly putting ideas in my wife’s head not at all supportive of me. A few weeks ago, I received an email that read, "I’ve decided to join the State Department and live a life abroad working in International Deplomacy". I asked how I fit into that, and she stopped communicating with me. My wife then started telling her family and friends that I was clingy and crazy. The more I tried to save the marriage, the more clingy and crazy I appeared. Last week, she hired an attorney and wants a divorce. I live in Virginia (i should probably mention that fact).
When she departed on the deployment she left me with @15K in debt she had coming into the marriage. During the entire deployment – now 4 months in, I have not received one dime from her. Her attorney has ordered a protective order keeping me from the marital home and my wife’s property – real and otherwise. I’ve also been told by her attorney that I can’t contact anyone in the military. (ummmm, I work for the military as a Department of the Army Civilian)
I’ve hired an attorney. My question. WHAT THE FU#@ AM CAN I DO? I am very spiritual and have a lot of problems with divorces as this will be my second. 1st divorce came after my deployment.
I want to save the marriage but I have mentally prepared myself that it’s over. HOWEVER; I am not conceding any of the pay and allowances that are due to me…. Please tell me what I can do.

If President Herbert Hoover was alive today would you vote for him?

Senator Obama is a mirror of President Herbert Hoover. After reading about Hoover, would you vote for Obama?

Herbert Clark Hoover (August 10, 1874 – October 20, 1964) was the thirty-first President of the United States (1929–1933).

Besides his political career, Hoover was a professional mining engineer and author.

That position was challenged by the Great Depression, which began in 1929, the first year of his presidency. Hoover tried to combat the Depression with volunteer efforts and government action, none of which produced economic recovery during his term. The consensus among historians is that Hoover’s defeat in the 1932 election was caused primarily by failure to end the downward spiral into deep Depression.

Economy

In order to pay for these and other government programs, Hoover agreed to one of the largest tax increases in American history. The Revenue Act of 1932 raised income tax on the highest incomes from 25% to 63%. The estate tax was doubled and corporate taxes were raised by almost 15%. Also, a "check tax" was included that placed a 2-cent tax (over 30 cents in today’s dollars) on all bank checks. Economists William D. Lastrapes and George Selgin,[25] conclude that the check tax was "an important contributing factor to that period’s severe monetary contraction." Hoover also encouraged Congress to investigate the New York Stock Exchange, and this pressure resulted in various reforms.

National debt expressed as a fraction of gross national product climbs from 20% to 40% under Hoover; levels off under FDR; soars during World War II. From Historical Statistics US (1976)For this reason, years later libertarians argued that Hoover’s economics were statist. Franklin D. Roosevelt blasted the Republican incumbent for spending and taxing too much, increasing national debt, raising tariffs and blocking trade, as well as placing millions on the dole of the government. Roosevelt attacked Hoover for "reckless and extravagant" spending, of thinking "that we ought to center control of everything in Washington as rapidly as possible," and of leading "the greatest spending administration in peacetime in all of history." Roosevelt’s running mate, John Nance Garner, accused the Republican of "leading the country down the path of socialism".[26]

What has America become?

volunteer pay the national debt

I just finished reading a question where the poster simply asked why America has become so greedy. He volunteers for his community, plans to travel to a third world nation to volunteer, wants to help this country change, etc. The posters were almost all being immature about it telling him to leave, that he’s an idiot regardless of his degree, etc.

Well, I have something to say…

Do you remember why this country became independent? Yes, because we were getting ridiculous taxes. They were taxing so much, from paper, to tea and tobacco, and we got tired of it.

Well do you see something wrong? We get taxed on EVERYTHING you buy. Manufacturers get taxed for the raw materials they purchase, then they sell to retailers and they pay tax when buying products. When those products are sold to you, the "consumer" you pay a sales tax on that. That same product was taxed several times. If you’re a smoker, you pay more in taxes than on an actual pack of cigarettes. They’re introducing a tax on soda (Aside the sales tax) and on "Tanning" for those UV tanning booths.

From your paycheck, if you add up all that’s taken away, you basically worked for several months..yes months…for free. All the money you made for those months was taken directly by your government. In New Jersey, it’s not uncommon at all to pay upwards of ,000 a year for homeowners as property tax as well. The interest you made in the bank? That gets taxed too.

And yet they still have no money and have a national debt of over 12 TRILLION dollars… (debtclock.com). Then you have the Wal-Marts… these guys that pay cents for their products knowingly made oversees by people who work almost full days straight and get compensated with enough to buy a bowl of rice and a bottle of water for the day, they come around and offer the same products for slightly cheaper (in many cases for only a few cents cheaper) than the competition and run all small businesses out. (Wal-Mart even sells coffins..that’s right…coffins…at an affordable price! Only online!). These gargantuan companies care nothing more than to squeeze every last dollar possible from the lower classes of america. Hey, I hear they pay a little over minimum wage, though, at least!

With so many enormous franchises, a lot of people have lost their touch with humanity. We are a social people. We are supposed to love our fellow man, respect and help. As the companies get larger and larger, they get colder and colder. The people running them are heartless pricks cashing in hundreds of millions of dollars per year for their salaries and laughing at the consumer the entire way.

We are conditioned to not give a hoot about our neighbors, to keep our faces stuck to the latest iphone, the latest slick and big tv! The next BIG BIG BIG car, we are taught to want everything, want it NOW, and want MORE. The average american is thousands in debt. We are trained to believe that we are nothing if we don’t own anything. The more you own, the better you are. The bigger your tv or car, the better you are.

It’s a country that started off on the right foot, but has been heading on a downward spiral so fast lately. There’s a lot of great people left, don’t get me wrong. These people, however, are quickly being outnumbered. There are less and less ethics, less and less morals, and more and more of our freedoms get taken away one at a time..but consistently enough. for your safety..

A law passed where you can’t sell tobacco or tobacco products over the internet…for the safety of our children! Don’t most kids stand outside a convenience store or gas station and ask people nearby to get the ciggarettes for them? I never heard of an underage kid buying a 1 pound bulk bag of tobacco, a tobacco injector, several cartons of empty tubes, and start cranking his own cigarettes. No..in the name of your children’s safety, they now guarantee that not only your children, but everyone else buys their ultra-taxed packs of cigarettes that are over a pack in New Jersey and over in New York.

Where they install cameras on traffic lights…it’s been proven that in many cases, they hand over the controls to the civil engineers who get a commission for every ticket the police give for running a red light, so the intentionally decrease the amount of time the yellow light is supposed to stay lit. this means that if you’re used to 4.5 seconds (Which is a standard in many counties across the nation), and suddenly you have a yellow light that now only lasts 3.8 seconds, that fraction of a second is the difference between you making it on time, or running a red light.

Tickets increase, revenues increase for the police departments and the civil engineers for their commissions, and us runts that just want to get to work on time have to pay the price for their trickery. In fact, sometimes th

National Health Care – The problems and a solution. Does it work?

volunteer pay the national debt

Okay – this may be completely wrong, I’m gonna start out TELLING you guys that I’m only 16 yrs old; therefore, I have limited wisdom on the workings of this world, but either way, I HAVE the ability to reason and do research. AS a 16 year old, this type of thing affect MY future as well. My generation gets the brunt of what’s going on. And here’s what I think:

We need health care reform, but socialized medicine – this national health care system – is the wrong way to go about it.
1) We’re already WAY in debt and the government can’t pay for this right now.
2) Canada has one very similar to what we’re working towards and it often takes MONTHS to get in to a doctor. Many patients who need to be treated for serious things often come to the US because they can’t get in to see anyone there. Does Obama’s healthcare plan address these issues?
3) Doctors. Now most humans are generally selfish people. It’s a fact. Get used to it. Who’s gonna want to go to school for all that extra time, or provide real quality care, when their salary is cut and no matter how they treat the patients, they’l keep coming back? Say goodbye to quality care.
4) If you can get free care, wouldn’t you call in for EVERY little thing? Many people would. Things that people normally wouldn’t go to the doctor for, would become priority. This backs up lines and takes advantage of the system. Does Obama’s plan address THIS issue?

What should we do?

Well, you know how everyone is required to have car insurance to drive? Make it the same with health insurance.
I know that probably makes a lot of people go, "Ugh! How dare she say that!" But think about it, if it is a necessity (which is SHOULD be for everyone) then people will strap to get it. And if more people are buying health insurance, won’t rates go down? Also, open up more free clinics. Now there’s a government plan worth implementing. Say you’ve got the BARE minimum coverage which would only cover like…emergency hospital visits. You can go to a free clinic. There are a few open now, but let’s revisit number 3 above. Humans are generally selfish. Why would a doctor volunteer time at a free clinic if he got nothing out of it? This is how it is now. So there are only a few doctors who volunteer. But say that doctors (who are typically in a pretty high tax bracket) could write off their volunteer time on their taxes. This would serve as an incentive for more volunteers. MANY more.

So here’s my solution:
Healthcare required. And set up a certain number of free clinics in each state, dependent on population. Does it work?
I think some people are missing my point. The idea of free clinics is different than straight up socialized medicine because the care is different. It’s your basic care at minimum expense. It isn’t the nice offices most of us visit today. It isn’t specialized care. Long lines, less than par, but at least everyone has a chance to receive care. Which is the issue, right?

And someone said "Why should doctors be rich?" Well… typically the a major incentive for a doctor to spend 12-16 years in school is the salary and the stability of a medical career. If they were going to get paid the same salary as a teacher, why not just go to school for much less time and start making your living much sooner? Common sense.
I DO NO SUPPORT SOCIALIZED MEDICINE OR GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE. The only thing the government does is open free clinics and tell everyone they gotta get some minimum coverage. Free clinics work on a volunteer basis, doctors bring their own equipment (this is how it is now) You need to be referred to get an MRI or something – bam, you have minimum coverage because you HAVE to have it.

How do I get the two non-profits that I used to volunteer with to leave me alone now?

volunteer pay the national debt

I quit volunteering at a National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter and a day center for mentally ill adults recently for several reasons. Now that I’ve quit and have made it quite clear, they keep calling me at least once a week trying to get me to come back and to ask me to do things for them.

I quit the day center because the demands of other volunteers were getting on my nerves. For example, one of them tried to get me to bake pumpkin pie for 100 people for the center’s Thanksgiving dinner using my own kitchen and own supplies. Another volunteer did nothing but yell at me for things that I didn’t do (often times in front of other people) and just generally boss me around where she didn’t have the authority; the director wouldn’t take me seriously and told me that I’ve been treated worse before ( before I moved the area, I spent 2 years working in a credit card call center doing fraud prevention and I got cussed at a lot by customers) so it shouldn’t be an issue. I told her that I was being PAID ( an hour + benefits) to deal with those people and that its one thing to be treated badly by a customer but to be treated badly by staff is a whole different situation. The staff at my previous job NEVER embarrassed me or made un-reasonable demands either. On days that I decided not to come in they would call me up at home and try to guilt me into coming in too.

The other non-profit would always try to guilt me into doing things for them even when I made it clear that I was busy or simply didn’t want to.

Basically both groups were staffed by demanding elderly people who couldn’t get it through their thick heads that as an adult (I’m 23) I was their equal and that I deserved the same respect I gave them.

I also quit both because my husband and I decided that we can’t make it on his income alone and still pay off the K in student loans we owe, in a reasonable amount of time so I just took a job as a debt collector/customer service rep for a financial services company; I actually start tomorrow.

That’s another thing, both groups also don’t understand why I have to work.

The responses I’ve gotten from them on our financial situation have been things like; "your husband’s income will go up" (you can’t count on that 100% and its not fair that he has to pay off debt that I incurred as K of it is mine) "why can’t you extend the terms of your student loans?" (yeah, right; we already don’t want to be in our 40’s just paying off our loans, let alone our 50’s) "can’t you get disability?" (I’m MI but am 100% functional and have been for several years so there is ZERO chance that I’d qualify, even my doctor says so)

I didn’t mean to rant but they’re being pretty stupid about this and I’m actually afraid that they’re going to bother me at my new job as its in the same neighborhood as their offices. Any tips on keeping the weirdos away? :)

How long would it take to pay off the US national debt religious organizations were taxed for their income?

volunteer pay the national debt

Does anyone have an idea how much money is donated every year to religions? The LDS Church, for example, gets about 5-6 billion in revenues per year, and has donated about 0 million back (total, since 1983) in charitable gifts, volunteer hours, food products, and disaster relief. That makes a net difference of one hell of a lot of money. Does anyone know the grand total in the US?
I’m not at all advocating government spending on the needy. I believe that’s a job for private citizens – if churches donate, let it work as any other company, where the donations would be tax-deductible. But let’s tax them the same as any other organization.

Once the debt is paid, I would suggest reducing all taxes, both for organizations and individuals, and removing wasteful programs like welfare or social security – giving the power back to the people to decide how to best allocate their assets.
99: The government also has to separate from the media; but it still taxes NBC, CNN (Turner), and the other networks. In fact, I would submit that by offering a tax-exempt status to religions solely on the basis of their religious goals, this violates the establishment clause and is unconstitutional.
Phoenix: That you spent on your last pair of jeans was already taxed when you earned it to. The Gap provides a product or service that you spend money on, just like a church does. There is no difference.
LDS of 3 (and others with similar points): I know what the Church does with those funds. All corporations have lighting and maintenance expenses, and pay full wages, etc. They’re not taxed on their "revenue", but on their profits.

I am not talking about taxing donations to religious organizations – only that at the end of the day, religious organizations be taxed on the net income received – meaning donations less deductible expenses. As it is now, religious organizations can claim unlimited revenue deferrals, so that they can "tuck money away" to claim in future years, without ever being required to claim it. Therefore, they can technically say they aren’t making a profit, even though revenues far exceed expenses.

From the "deferred revenue" account, these organizations pay out expensable "consulting fees" to key stakeholders such as leaders, pastors, etc., which would correlate to "dividends" in a taxable public corporation, but that religious organizations don’t have to claim.

What do you think about Income tax being voluntary?

voluntary tax

There is no law say you have to pay them, and the Constitution states very clearly they are voluntary. 99% of your income tax goes to paying the national debt. Roads, schools, defense, police, derive revenue from state, and sales tax. I don’t think of myself as a conspiracy theorist, but Federal Reserve stuff is really scary, any thoughts?
